Little Sister (2017)

First review. Working forwards to backwards, from this newer indie film to older beloved films to come.
"Little Sister", simply a gem of an indie film. Kisses all around. Minor spoilers.
To quickly go on to the positive points, I first want to address Ally Sheedy's character, as the mother. She was horrifying! She played an immature mother with emotional problems brilliantly though. Maybe I say brilliantly too generously here, but she really bothered me. So, to me that spells good acting. This could be a positive point of the movie, but she made me upset in fact and kind of gave me anxiety actually. Her daughter, the protagonist here played by Addison Timlin, she's wonderful at times, as a girl who had ran off to become a nun to avoid her troubled mother, she then decides to reconnect after a pretty standard motherly email, which in most cases would repel a child. Maybe the solitary, plain lifestyle has gotten to her we can assume. She's kind of dead inside, but this seems to be a theme with protagonists of the last 10 -or so years in movies. Is this saying something of the general public here? Nawww.
Not to spoil the inside joke of this movie, but it's meant to be ironic that she's a nun. You see, her head nun -head nun? Mother nun? Whatever her title would be- is played by Barbara Crampton, a famously known horror movie actress, -who looks criminally beautiful for her age- so it's all too obviously ironic for the in-the-know. Especially when the girl breaks into her slaughter-house baby number, a little ditty by Gwar and some Jello, smearing red Jello on her white makeup, gothic mug. The scene between her and her brother -who had been severely burned on his face and body- is very sweet when she kisses him on his cheek. It breaks my heart to see others in such pain. And I can relate on a personal level to his self-imposed isolation. The actor Keith Poulson (who wasn't bad in Listen Up Philip) did a fine job at portraying inner sadness well. I have to mention something, or I'll kick myself about it later, his character Jacob and his wife to be Tricia, they are totally the characters of Toxi and Sara from the Toxic Avenger! I totally caught the reference and I loved it. Super-hot blonde, modelesque wife for the deformed man, why not? Sounds about right to me. I also enjoyed the scene of the entire family dancing around in their living room like a New Wave Munsters, it's worth seeing. Especially knowing that they just ate a whole bunch of pot cupcakes that the mom made for them secretly for Halloween. Later, Addison's character Colleen says; "Is it always this fun to be high?' I can answer that, no -but there are some great times for sure!
It's also a period piece this movie, taking place during the election time of that Obama presidential candidacy, remember him? And the Liberals who were pumped for "Change", that mass hysteria that was sweeping the nation. And here are the disenfranchised of it, this family in this movie.
This is somewhat of a quick review, because I think the movie is worth watching and the score of the movie is worth listening to. The bands that were played among the score were; The Vanishing, Subtonix, Parade Ground and others. Some of my personal favorites of my early 20s. The music guy, Hanz something, I believe, must have been a big fan of No Wave music and early synthpop. Get this guy more movies.
Indie films of the last 5 years -or more, have been loaded with great 80s songs and some alternative songs that were movie made, and for some reason big budget films don't see that there's value in these indie, more unknown indie bands being used. Plus, it would be cheaper, dum-dums. You are cheap, when it comes down to it. Anyone working in Hollyweird would know, with the experience of being short-changed.
So, fuck mainstream Hollywood and enjoy Little Sister. You will be glad that you did, in a weird Addams Family type of way.
